From Unknown Roads to New Horizons

April 27, 2024

Today marks another step forward on my journey as I walked from Sintra, Lisbon District, Portugal to Cascais, Lisbon District, Portugal. The transition between these two picturesque towns was filled with delightful experiences and valuable lessons.

Morning Stroll in Sintra

I began my day early in Sintra, a town renowned for its romantic 19th-century architecture and lush hills. The crisp morning air was perfect for exploring the winding streets.

Highlights:

  • Palácio Nacional de Sintra: This historic palace boasts stunning chimneys and intricate tile work. The guided tour provided fascinating insights into Portugal's royal past.
  • Quinta da Regaleira: A must-see! The gardens are like a scene from a fairy tale, with hidden tunnels and enigmatic symbols scattered throughout.

Lunch at Café Saudade

After a morning of sightseeing, I enjoyed a hearty lunch at Café Saudade, a cozy spot known for its traditional Portuguese dishes.

  • Bacalhau à Brás: A delicious codfish dish with eggs and potatoes.
  • Pastéis de Nata: The quintessential Portuguese custard tarts—absolutely divine!

Afternoon Walk to Cascais

In the afternoon, I set off on a scenic walk to Cascais. The route along the coastline offered breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Must-Sees Along the Way:

  1. Convento dos Capuchos: A serene convent nestled in the pine forest, perfect for a moment of reflection.
  2. Boca do Inferno: A dramatic cliff formation where waves crash against the rocks, creating mesmerizing patterns.

Evening in Cascais

Arriving in Cascais, the vibrant town welcomed me with its lively atmosphere. I spent the evening exploring the marina and mingling with both locals and fellow travelers.

Places Visited:

  • Marina de Cascais: A beautiful waterfront area with yachts and friendly faces.
  • Casa das Histórias Paula Rego: An art museum dedicated to the works of the famous Portuguese artist.

People I Met:

Met an inspiring artist named Maria, who shared stories of her creative process and the local art scene. Her passion was contagious and reminded me of the importance of pursuing one's passions.

Lessons Learned

This journey taught me the value of embracing change. Transitioning between Sintra and Cascais, I realized that each place has its unique rhythm and beauty. Being open to new experiences enriches the soul and fuels the spirit of adventure.

As the sun set over Cascais, I felt grateful for the day's experiences and excited for what lies ahead.
